LeMarchant-St. Thomas Elementary

French Immersion

The Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE) provides all students with the opportunity to learn the French language by offering a Core Program from Grade 4 through to Grade 12. This program is compulsory for Grades 4 to 9 students. Alternatives to the Core Program include Integrated French, Early French Immersion and Late French Immersion programs. These programs have various entry points:

Early French Immersion – Grade Primary entry

Late French Immersion – Grade 7 entry

Integrated French – Grade 7 entry

Here at LeMarchant we offer the Early French Immersion program that begins in Primary and is designed for students whose first language is not French.

According to guidelines set by the HRCE 90-100% of instruction at the Primary to Grade 2 level is conducted in French. In Grades 3-6, when formal instruction in English as a subject is introduced, about 80-85% of instruction happens in French.
