The Halifax Regional School Board (HRSB) provides all students with the opportunity to learn the French language by offering a Core Program from Grade 4 through to Grade 12. This program is compulsory for Grades 4 to 9 students. Alternatives to the Core Program include Integrated French, Early French Immersion and Late French Immersion programs. These programs have various entry points:
Early French Immersion – Grade Primary entry
Late French Immersion – Grade 7 entry
Integrated French – Grade 7 entry
(You will find more information about these programs on the HRSB website: French Programs information).
Here at LeMarchant we offer the Early French Immersion program that begins in Primary and is designed for students whose first language is not French. As of October 2012, our student population included approximately 310 French immersion students in 13 classes.
According to guidelines set by the Halifax Regional School Board 90-100% of instruction at the Primary to Grade 2 level is conducted in French. In Grades 3-6, when formal instruction in English as a subject is introduced, about 80-85% of instruction happens in French.
LeMarchant St. Thomas offers the Early French Immersion Program to students whose parent(s) or guardian lives in the catchment areas of the following schools:
Inglis Street Elementary
LeMarchant St. Thomas
Sir Charles Tupper
Registration for Early French Immersion takes place in February and is done at your designated French Immersion school. For complete registration information visit the Registration page of the HRSB website.
For students outside these areas but who wish to attend the French program at LeMarchant, please consult the Student Registration Policy PDF on the HRSB website.
